The twin miniseries ofHouse of X and Powers of Xrocked theX-Menfranchise to its core in 2019. It shook the line up with radical ideas, such as the mutant nation of Krakoa, mutant resurrection, and much more. These opened the door to a wealth of possibilities in storytelling, exploring different concepts throughout the line of X-Men comics.

As these ideas are explored, the X-line has gone through distinct phases. First, it was theDawn of X, then theReign of X. Now it’s time forDestiny of X, whichMarveldescribes as the Second Age of Krakoa.

What Should I Read Beforehand?

The current status quo for the X-Men might seem confusing if you’re brand new or haven’t read for a while. A lot has happened in the last few years. Here are a few of the tentpole stories that will get you up to speed.

House of X/Powers of X
Written by Jonathan Hickman. Art by Pepe Larraz and R.B Silva.

These twin miniseries are the foundation of the X-Men for the past few years. It introduces all of the vital concepts such as the island nation of Krakoa, resurrection, and much more.

You can find out more about how to read it with this reading order.

Inferno
Written by Jonathan Hickman. Art by Valerio Schiti, R.B Silva, and Stefano Caselli.

This four-part miniseries concludes many of the stories that Hickman set up during his time on the X-Men. At the same time, it helps set up for the future. There are some ideas from this that are used in Destiny of X era.

X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine
Written by Benjamin Percy. Art by Federico Vicentini and Joshua Cassara.

Similar to Inferno, these Wolverine-themed twin miniseries have paved the way for future stories in the Destiny of X era.

Find out how to read these miniseries with this reading order.

Further down the guide, I will mention a few more comics that relate to specific series. These won’t be essential reading. More of a suggestion if you want to dig deeper into what has happened before. If written well, the Destiny of X comics will give you everything you need to know.

Do You Have To Read Everything?

No. The great thing with the X-Men line is that you’re not required to read everything if you don’t want to. Each title explores its own corner of the wider comics universe.

Read the comics that appeal to you. This could be based on the premise, creators involved, or characters included.

Which Comics Are Part Of Destiny Of X?

As you will soon see, the comics that are part of Destiny of X are a selection of new and existing titles.

New titles join Destiny of X at issue one. The continuing series enter this new era at a particular issue number, which you can find more about below.

X-Men Red #1

Written by Al Ewing. Art by Stefano Caselli.

Last year’s Planet-Size X-Men revealed that the X-Men had terraformed Mars. While we’ve seen some tiny peeks at what’s been happening on the red planet, this new series will finally explore it in much more detail.

In Marvel’s announcement, writer Al Ewing had this to say about the new series:

“Mars is now Planet Arakko, home to an ancient mutant society that spent thousands of years facing war, imprisonment and pain – and home to Storm, who won a place of power on their ruling council. Now Arakko has a chance to find peace at last and forge their own path to the future… but there are those who’d rather see them fenced in and subjugated. Does Mars really need X-Men to save it – or can the mutants of Arakko fight for themselves? Storm’s not the only one who’s asking… and the answers are in X-MEN RED.”

The comic will feature Storm, Magneto, Sunspot, Abigail Brand, Cable, Vulcan, and others.
