Haverhill - Robert "Bob" Edgar Barney, a beloved member of the community, passed away on June 24, 2024 at the age of eighty-six.
Bob was born in St. Johnsbury, VT on January 25, 1938 to Elmer O. and Evelyn M. (Wilfore) Barney.
His life was characterized by dedication, service, and a passion for nature and animals. From his early days in North Danville, to his years of service in the Navy and his long-standing career at Raytheon, Bob left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bob's journey began in the small town of North Danville, where he spent most of his youth. His formative years culminated in his graduation from North Danville High School in 1955. Following his graduation, Bob made a significant decision to join the Navy, where he served on aircraft carriers as a Seaman First Class. This period not only shaped his character but also instilled in him a strong sense of duty and responsibility. After his military service, Bob embarked on a successful career at Raytheon Company, where he dedicated 53 years of service. His commitment to excellence and continuous learning led him to pursue further education at Lowell Tech while working full-time. Throughout his career, Bob's work took him to various corners of the globe, including Thailand, the Netherlands, and Lowell, where he made valuable contributions to the field of technology.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Bob had a deep passion for Japanese Gardens and spent his free time creating tranquil and harmonious spaces. His love for animals extended to volunteering at the MSPCA shelter, where he selflessly donated his time and energy to care for animals in need. He was active in masonry for 27 years and was Past Master of Merrimack Lodge F. & A.M. Bob loved spending time in New Hampshire and his home state of Vermont. He was also an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Groveland. Bob's family was at the center of his world, and he cherished his relationships with his loved ones, which included attending many sporting events and dance recitals with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marianne Barney of Bradford, MA, children from his first marriage, Michael (Sheryl) Barney of Harwinton, CT, and Susan (Matthew) Peters of Raymond, NH. Additionally, his stepchildren, Lorraine Carboni of Lakeville, MA, Steven N. Cassotis of Raleigh, NC, and Stephanie (Eric) Messina of Chester, NH. Grandchildren, Molly and Jack Barney, Casey Peters, Cory-Robert and Kendelle Carboni, Steven (Olivia) Cassotis and great-grandson Koen Carboni, all of whom were constant source of happiness and fulfillment for Bob. Also, his sister Mary (Jan) Hatch of Gardner, MA and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Elmer O. Barney, Jr.
In conclusion, Robert Edger Barney's life was a testament to the value of dedication, service, and love. His legacy lives on through the memories shared by his family, friends, and community. Bob's commitment to his work, his passion for nature and animals, and his unwavering love for his family are a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who were touched by his presence.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 12:00 noon at St. James Episcopal Church in Groveland. Calling hours will precede the service from 10:00 to 12:00 pm. Inurnment to follow at Harmony Cemetery in Georgetown.
